The Teething Timeline

Just like human babies, Cavalier puppies go through a significant teething phase. It typically begins around 3 to 4 months of age when their deciduous (baby) teeth start falling out to make room for 42 permanent adult teeth. This process can last until the puppy is 7 or 8 months old. During this time, you might find tiny rice-sized teeth on the floor or, more likely, your puppy will swallow them—which is perfectly normal.

Signs Your Puppy is Teething:

  • Increased chewing on furniture, shoes, or hands.
  • Slightly swollen or bleeding gums.
  • Low-grade fever or increased irritability.
  • Drooling more than usual.
  • Slow eating or "finicky" behavior with hard kibble.

Providing Safe Relief

Your puppy isn't being "bad" when they chew your favorite leather boots; they are trying to relieve the intense pressure in their gums. As a responsible owner, you must provide appropriate outlets. Frozen washcloths are a classic and effective remedy. The cold numbs the gums, while the texture of the cloth provides the resistance they crave.

Rubber Chew Toys

Look for high-quality, non-toxic rubber toys. Brands like Kong offer puppy-specific formulas that are softer for developing jaws.

Dental Chews

Appropriately sized dental sticks can help clean teeth while providing a satisfying chew experience. Always supervise your puppy.

Training Through the Bites

"Mouthiness" is common. Use this time to teach "Bite Inhibition." If your puppy nips your hand, let out a high-pitched "Ow!" and redirect their attention to a toy. Consistency is key. Everyone in the household must follow the same rules to ensure your Cavalier grows into a gentle adult.

When to Call the Vet

Keep an eye out for "retained deciduous teeth." This happens when an adult tooth comes in, but the baby tooth hasn't fallen out. This is common in smaller breeds like Cavaliers and can lead to overcrowding and decay. If you see "double teeth," consult your veterinarian during your next check-up.
